Mad-Engineering with take-home projects
that can be used with LEGO
® bricks!

Mad Science BRIXOLOGY Camp lays the foundation for our next generation of makers! Kids learn about different types of engineering and then team up to construct different engineering-themed projects using LEGO® bricks. They learn about aerospace engineering while assembling a space station. They explore mechanical engineering as they build boats and vehicles. From carnival rides to drawing machines, mechanical animals to truss bridges, your future engineer will build upon their creativity to solve real-world design challenges while developing their problem-solving and team-building skills. Take-home projects are provided each day, most of which are brick-based and can be used with LEGO® bricks at home. Let the tinkering begin!

The most frequent reaction to the chemistry demonstrations in this camp is “Wow!” – one simple word with great experiences behind it. During this action-packed camp kids explore chemistry in a playful, safe manner. With spectacular hands-on activities and amazing demonstrations, kids will both learn and apply the concepts, tools and techniques of real chemists. Campers will start by learning real lab techniques and safety procedures, and then use these to mix crazy concoctions and chemical combos. They will experiment with super-sticky-stuff, explore glow-in-the-dark technology, mix potions, and grow crystals! They will learn the real chemistry behind polymers, and make several different types of slime! Each camper will take home a full set of Mad Science lab gear that includes a graduated cylinder, a beaker, a flask, procedures, and then use these to mix crazy concoctions and chemical combos.

Mad Machines & Crazy Contraptions

This summer camp is designed by you—the Inventor! Each day you’ll be given a series of challenges which must be overcome using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world famous inventors and the most important thing of all – your mind. If you were stranded on a desert island how would you survive? You will need to build shelter, find food and purify water, protect yourself and your teammates from the elements and find a way off the island – or die trying (not really). Journey to the future and examine the ultramodern inventions of the 23rd century. Then design the future - today. "Create" mini light sabers, “green energy”, and hovercraft. With a little bit of ingenuity you’ll construct catapults and forts and then lay siege, fabricate a winning Egg Drop design, construct a dancing robot and experiment with a Salt Water Fuel Cell Car. While Thomas Edison said invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, this camp is 100% fun!

Nature Adventure

Explore the natural world and the adaptations that allow birds and beasts to thrive. There is a new and different fun take-home project each day. Make plaster casts of animal tracks. Learn how animals protect themselves: survive icy cold like a polar bear and dissect oysters to see how they resist an annoying itch. Build a bird feeder and mix your own seed blend to attract specific bird species. Make recycled paper. Tie-dye t-shirts with vegetable dyes. Test water for pollution, and then build a water filter to remove anything nasty. Construct a bug house for observing real, live bugs. Study the feeding habits of owls and look at the animal bones they leave behind. Learn about geology by growing your own crystal garden and breaking open your own geode to find (and keep!) real crystals. And pan for spectacular gems and minerals that can be found in the Hudson Valley.

NASA: Journey Into Outer Space

Kids start in the Earth’s atmosphere and end up in the stars in this super sampler of space science. This voyage of discovery will explore planets, moons, comets, and other phenomena in our solar system. Come investigate our sun, and other stars and the galaxies they form. Build a Mad Science rocket and then design, build and launch your own version. Learn about the challenges of living in space and undergo astronaut training. Work with lenses and build a telescope. Discover technologies developed for use in outer space while navigating a laser maze. Campers will have lots of projects to make and take home including two rockets, space copter, meteorological station, star chart, and a telescope. Material developed by Mad Science in partnership with NASA.

Mission: Code 

Mission: Code is a unique summer camp experience that allows kids to learn essential coding skills while also engaging in active games and hands-on learning.  Kids will develop computational thinking and problem solving skills in an online game environment where you give a robot a set of instructions to follow in order to solve the level.  Each coding session provides kids with a fundamental skill set including algorithms, functions, relative directions and sequences. The combination of online activities paired with engaging offline activities like scavenger hunts, code-cracking mysteries and team robotics challenges that keep kids active and reinforce coding skills is a winning formula for fun in the summer!

Radical Robots

Are you ready to take over the world with your cunning creations, or would you like to design machines that can save the planet? Explore the basic and complex technology used to design and build robots. Discover how machines and robots work and how they make our lives easier. Learn about simple machines, gear structure, battery wiring, motor principles, and electronic circuits.  Experiment with different forms of locomotion – including wheels, legs, and “tracks”. Build your very own EM4 Robot (new 2019) and several other take-home projects, including a catapult, a mega pincher lever project, and an electrical circuit.

Calling all agents! This camp is part forensics and part “spy science”. Step into the shoes of a detective—uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. Students will create, collect, and analyze evidence and discover what skills are necessary as a crime scene lab technician. They examine clues and get hot on the trail of a culprit, and then connect the dots using science to help solve a crime in a hands-on investigation. From edible messages and decoding clues, students will have the opportunity to check out some of the skills that spies must master as they journey into the world of espionage. Take home projects include an ultraviolet Fingerprint Finder kit, Spyglasses that let you secretly watch people who are behind you, Spy-noculars, a Secret Code Breaker, and an Inspecti-kit for evidence collection.

Underground Explorers (Updated for 2019)

Unearth the past in this archaeology and paleontology camp. Dig into the physical remains left behind by people and animals long ago. Learn how fossils were created. Make your own fossil replicas, including a Velociraptor claw, a T-Rex tooth, and an insect trapped in amber. Identify ancient fossils - including some from the Hudson Valley! Explore human history by examining the objects that ancient peoples left behind. Delve into the mysteries the lost city of Pompeii.  Participate in a mock archaeological dig and attempt to solve an ancient mystery. Preserve genuine artifacts and  take home an actual Roman coin that is over a thousand years old!

Science Explorers

This is the Mad Science super science sampler. Explore the world of science with a different set of fun science topics each day. Campers will experiment with super strong magnets and have a "hair raising" experience while learning about electricity. They will play tricks on each others senses by experimenting with their taste buds and manipulating sound waves. Kids will investigate light waves, explore the properties of color, and then baffle their eyes by exploring optical illusions. They will also play with unusual science toys to reverse engineer how they work, and analyze the amazing properties of slime. Projects that campers will make and take home include a periscope, an electric Newtonian color wheel, floating magnets, a static electricity stick, a superball, a color changing "heat sheet", SLIME, and more!
